"Mr President, I extend my deepest condolences to the families of victims of the Paris attacks. We stand united against terror. Paris was an attack against us all. Let us not forget too that every day is Paris somewhere in the Muslim world. Only yesterday we witnessed another terrorist attack in Tunisia. In order to bring the perpetrators to justice and to prevent further attacks, better EU intelligence cooperation, data-sharing and surveillance are crucial. This is why I applaud the most concrete step taken so far to increase European security: the decision to launch a European counter-terrorism centre under Europol supervision.
The centre will bring together leading counter-terrorism specialists from each Member State. They will work together under one roof on operational coordination. Fear cannot be countered only by increasing security. We must counter it with facts, and the facts are clear: Muslims are not the enemy. In our battle against extremism, Muslims in Europe and abroad are our allies. Amid fear and pessimism we must remain true to our values, upholding freedom and human rights while providing security to our citizens."@en1
