"Mr President, I would also like to congratulate my Socialist colleague, Ole Christensen, on his excellent report, and I would also like to congratulate, as I did in the Committee, the Commissioner for her announcement that the list of substances in the Carcinogens and Mutagens Directive will be updated. That is the kind of concrete, common-sense politics that I think these institutions are good at.
But I would also like to slightly chide my Conservative colleagues for always talking, when they talk about health and safety, about the burden on business, as though the one and the other go hand in hand and are the same things. Health and safety is not red tape, it is life and death. That is what we need to be stressing over and over again and not, every time the subject comes up, saying that we must ensure health and safety while also reducing burdens on business."@en1
