"Labour MEPs voted for this report, reflecting our deep commitment to supporting multilateralism in the world, and to back an active European Union role in the United Nations in pursuit of objectives for conflict resolution, human rights, international development and the fight against climate change. However, the European Parliamentary Labour Party voted against the sentence which suggested there should be a single EU seat in the UN Security Council. We strongly support UN reform – including of the Security Council – to reflect today’s reality and to support a fairer balance between developed, emerging and developing countries. But we do not believe that has to be achieved at the expense of the loss of my own country’s permanent seat, which British Labour has always sought to use for the very same objectives which we support for the European role. Euro-sceptics in Britain want to mislead our public by saying that we have to choose between promoting our own country’s interests and our country’s enthusiastic participation in the European Union. The UN is just one example of where this is a false choice. We can do both."@en1
