"More than 1 in 4 children are at risk of poverty or social exclusion in the EU, which is a total of 26 million+ minors. Children living in poverty are at a higher risk of poor health, are more likely not to finish school, experience worse relationships with their peers and consequently are unable to reach their full potential in life. As a children’s rights champion and co-founder of the parliamentary Children’s Rights intergroup, this report was of particular importance for me. Child poverty in my NW England constituency and across the UK remains a problem; the Tories continue to pursue austerity policies that promulgate poverty and have a disproportionate effect on young people. Labour MEPs have always championed a better quality of life, especially for the most vulnerable in society. The report calls for a real commitment from Member States to tackle the factors which cause child poverty, and increase the scope of social support for children. It promotes labour laws that guarantee, amongst other things, collective agreements and a statutory adequate minimum wage which will provide greater security for families and fight precarious employment. For all these reasons I voted in favour of the report."@en1
