"I supported this report on reducing inequalities with a special focus on child poverty. More than one in four children in the EU are at risk of poverty and social exclusion and the poverty rate for children is higher than that of any other age group, although this varies across Member States. The report highlights that a number of factors are involved in perpetuating the cycle of poverty, including not only material concerns such as food and shelter but also access to education, healthcare and intergenerational poverty. I supported the call for the Commission to set a Europe 2020 sub-target on reducing child poverty and social exclusion and to include in each Annual Growth Survey a specific section with the binding target on fighting child poverty as well as to include a specific indicator on children at risk of poverty or social exclusion in the social dimension of the EMU. I did not support the call for a child guarantee with a specific fund to be established as I believe that Member States can and should better utilise already—existing EU structural funds to fight the alarming rate of poverty among children in Europe."@en1
