"Mr President, you may believe in a high level of public services and a high tax economy; you may oppose privatisation; you may support wealth redistribution and income redistribution; and you may take a view that, fundamentally, universal benefits are better than means-tested benefits. Those are all positions which many people hold. But to my mind, it is fundamentally and morally wrong to misuse the very serious issue of child poverty as a vehicle to push these left—wing policies.
I personally feel that there is far more that we should do, as a nation, within the United Kingdom to tackle child poverty. My problem with this report, however, was that it had so much content on issues that are so different to the issue of child poverty. Therefore I could not support the report as a whole."@en1
