"I welcome this further step to improve the European Union’s role to advance marine conservation. Already this month in the Mediterranean there has been international agreement to maintain the bluefin tuna recovery plan, but I hope the EU will back efforts from the Worldwide Fund for Nature to improve traceability for this species everywhere, which remains an obstacle to the eradication of illegal fishing. As far as the southern bluefin tuna is concerned, it has become a victim of the international popularity of sushi, a single bluefin tuna selling for no less than USD 175 000 in a Japanese fish market. Pound for pound, it has been said to be as valuable as silver. Our efforts are not to destroy the trade but to return it to one of sustainable fishing. I welcome the recent commitment of the European Commissioner on Fisheries Mr Vella to close loopholes which allow for tuna overfishing, and I hope he – and we – can use this new European Union role to help us to do so."@en1
