"I voted against this attempt to subvert national electoral systems and traditions. It is very important for Member States to be able to retain their own voting traditions as they see fit. In the UK our traditional voting day is Thursday, and I therefore do not support calls for the Election Day to be unified across the EU. Furthermore I also do not want to see important decisions such as voting age set centrally by the EU, and I see no benefit in the proposed creation of a European Electoral Authority.
While the amendments to the voting threshold do not specifically affect the UK, I do not agree with solving an issue specific to one country via European legislation. I also cannot support the notion that the Lisbon Treaty provides Parliament with the right to choose the president of the European Commission, given that it represents an erosion of Member State prerogatives and will further politicise the Commission. I also disagree with the assertion in the report that greater harmonisation will ‘strengthen the political dimension of European integration’."@en1
