"Madam President, ‘nightmare’: that was the word used by a senior politician from Northern Ireland to describe the consequences of the United Kingdom leaving the European Union. Why nightmare? Three main reasons: First, exit from the EU would undermine 17 years of peace in a region that previously suffered decades of violence, civil strife and political failure. Second, the nature of the border between the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland would fundamentally change. Instead of it being a porous border between two fellow EU Member States, it would become a hard border, raising a whole host of questions regarding customs control, trade tariff and freedom of movement. Third, the loss of key funding structures for farmers, business and community regeneration programmes would have a devastating impact on a region where incomes are 20% lower than the EU average. To conclude, leaving the EU would not be cost-free. I put it to the Eurosceptics: would the end of the peace process in Northern Ireland, the building of a border fence and an increase in poverty be a price worth paying for a little England?"@en1
