"Madam President, the EU is failing in its targets to reduce poverty and social exclusion, and nowhere is this more apparent than in my own country, Ireland. Thanks to their austerity policies, the poverty rate in Ireland has doubled since 2008, and the most tragic manifestation of this is the housing and homelessness crisis. The number of homeless families in Dublin shot up by 106% in the 12 months to September, and there are nearly 2 300 people in emergency accommodation in my city, the majority of whom are children. There are now 5 000 citizens in temporary shelter across the state.
Government policies have directly caused this crisis. They have slashed social housing budgets and instead opted for policies that favour private landlords – hardly surprising when 24 of them are landlords themselves. They have allowed rents to spiral, provided inadequate rent supplements, cut mortgage interest supplements and made it easier for banks to repossess. The Irish Government urgently needs to change course, and it must build social housing, tackle spiralling rent costs and rent uncertainty, and act to stop forced evictions."@en1
