"Madam President, recently the
published a report alleging that some migrant workers are being abused in the Irish fishing industry and that some are being trafficked. The extent of these practices has not been determined. I have called on the Irish authorities to immediately increase the number of unannounced on-the-spot inspection checks on trawlers. This will help to protect the workers. It will also help to deter further abuse and show the many honest and decent trawler owners that they are not facing competition from low-cost illegal operators.
While in no way minimising the Irish situation, there is evidence of similar practices elsewhere. Commissioner Vella has called on the Irish authorities to put their house in order but, equally, the Commissioner has a responsibility to ensure that all EU countries fully comply with EU law to prevent trafficking and ensure the rights of migrant workers. Action is needed in Ireland, but it is also needed elsewhere in the EU."@en1
