"I voted in favour of this resolution for the development of satellite-based technology to enable global flight tracking systems.
The resolution asks the Commission to take steps towards developing a satellite-based global flight-tracking system to replace the current radar locations system (which has a much more limited scope). This would enable the location of aircraft at all times, even in remote locations (in this context, the resolution makes reference to the Air France AF447 and Malaysia Airlines MH370 tragedies).
The resolution also calls for a discussion at the World Radiocommunication Conference in November about allocating a specific radio spectrum to support this technology. (As an aside, the tech suggested – ADS-B – is already compulsory in Australia, and widely used in North America, China, the UAE and parts of Europe)."@en1
