"I have been concerned in recent years as the revelations have come out surrounding the use of mass surveillance techniques in relation to online data. The right to a private life is a right that is critical to the functioning of any decent society and that does not change when we go online. I was particularly eager to ensure that there is an effective level of protection to data transfers to the US in the wake of the striking down of Safe Harbour. The desire for safety is important, and the threats that the security forces protect us from are also real. However, we should not allow these facts to override the very freedoms that we are fighting protect. It is too easy to sacrifice real freedom for perceived security, hence why I have supported this resolution."@en1
