"Mr President, I attended the debate here in Parliament on this topic and I found it very enlightening. I must say that the rapporteur, Mr La Via, gave a good explanation of what was involved. I did not get to speak, but I am getting to speak now. I supported my group in the various votes. It is a difficult topic. It is actually not easy to be 100% certain that you are in favour of or against GMOs, but certainly one or two points occurred which I found interesting, namely that we are only producing 30% of our protein here in Europe. We have to import a lot of it to feed our livestock, and much of it comes from GMOs. If we take a decision not to have it, what is going to happen to the feedstock and what is going to happen to the competitiveness of Europe? But in the long term, citizens need reassurance, and for that we need absolutely independent, reliable research, especially in relation to health issues regarding GMOs."@en1
