"Mr President, one minute is not enough to do justice to the subject of the long—term lessons that we can take from the Ebola crisis. We need to be constructively critical – not just of the European Union, but also of our national governments. Firstly, the slow response to the crisis was a big problem internationally. Secondly, our westernised way of thinking quite often got in the way of finding the right solutions, which are often the quickest solutions to get something onto the ground. The charitable sector, the NGOs, actually understood this a lot better than we did in the West and in politics quite often. Thirdly, the myths that we saw in the media about Ebola – the way that people got an impression that was very different from the reality – was something which acted as a stumbling block. The media needs to be far more responsible than it was. Finally, there is an issue of money and the medical research that needed to be going into that, but sadly it was not sufficiently profitable for the drug companies. There are many, many reasons why we need to learn from that crisis."@en1
