"Madam President, I would like to thank the Commissioner for being here and I would like to thank the rapporteur for her report. Tourism is extremely important, as we all know, particularly for small and medium-sized enterprises in Ireland, the country I come from. I would like to address the VAT issue, which has been mentioned by many speakers. The reduction in VAT from 13.5% to 9% has been singularly successful in increasing employment and in boosting tourist numbers. It has been acknowledged by hotel federations, restaurant associations and others in the hospitality sector as directly boosting employment, and it is one of the success stories. Like my Greek colleague, we came to an agreement with the Troika: the government addressed this question with them, and they were allowed to reduce VAT provided they demonstrated that the funding could be provided from elsewhere. It resulted in a tax on pensions, which was not very popular at the time. However, three to four years later, the very successful outcome in terms of employment opportunities in the sector has more than outweighed the negative impact at the time. So I would say to the Commissioner, yes, reduction of VAT rates can be very successful in this extremely important sector, particularly for rural areas and islands, where tourism is so important."@en1
