"I voted against this report which deals with novel food (food not consumed in the EU before 1997) and cloning. I was not happy with the outcome of the negotiations on these issues. The issue of cloning was not adequately addressed as descendants of cloned animals were not covered. On food safety, the rules were also not clear enough, in that, on nanomaterials, controls by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) were limited to requests by the Commission. Furthermore, responsibility for judging whether a substance is a novel food or not, and thereby subject to this regulation, is left in the hands of operators: this does not provide sufficient consumer protection."@en1
