"Firstly, the Commission proposal disingenuously ignores the reality that the EU is reliant on imports of GM feed to sustain its livestock sector. The proposal could lead to farmers in some countries being denied access to affordable feed, which could in turn threaten their viability.
Secondly, the proposal undermines the fundamental principle of free movement of goods. With different rules across different Member States, how can we speak of a single market? The proposal fails to give any indications or reassurances of how opt-outs would be individually assessed and ultimately sanctioned if found to be contrary to free movement rules.
Thirdly, by allowing different national approaches, the proposal risks giving the impression that GMOs deemed safe by EFSA are in fact dangerous. This undermines science-based policymaking and exposes European citizens to scaremongering and irresponsible risk communication.
For these reasons, I voted to reject the Commission proposal. I did not support calls from colleagues for the Commission to draft a new proposal, or to refrain from authorising new GMO applications until a new proposal is adopted. Rather, I would prefer to see better implementation of the current rules which allow for authorisations on the basis of science-based, case-by-case assessment."@en1
