"I did not support the agreement between the Council and the Parliament to reform the General Court by multiplying by two the current number of judges.
I believe that reform of the court is necessary due to its increasingly heavy case burden and the ever-increasing duration of proceedings, as outlined by the General Court in its original request when it sought an increase of just 12 judges. Due to the Member States’ indecision and wrangling over the nationalities of judges we now have an increase of an additional 28 judges (including seven from the merger with the Civil Service Tribunal) without any assessment of whether such a high number can be justified. Making such a decision on the basis of Member State interests rather than the actual requirements of the Court is irresponsible and undermines the credibility of EU institutions in the eyes of citizens."@en1
