"I would like to grasp this opportunity to urge for action on the steel crisis taking place in the UK and my region of the West Midlands that risks driving hundreds of thousands into unemployment. 1 700 jobs are in the balance in Caparo, coming on top of around 6 000 jobs that were lost nationwide, including in Tata Steel. That is not to mention 100 000s of people working in the Midlands supply chain. This has not developed overnight, yet the UK Government failed to prevent this social bloodbath. EU funding is available to support the affected workers, but the Tories failed to apply. Still, there are other ways in which the EU can and should help: it should swiftly grant state aid approval so the industry can receive compensation for high energy prices – especially given the Tories are hiding behind the Commission rather than securing retrospective EU approval later. The EU should also take a firm stance against China dumping steel on our markets. 42 companies have shown interest in taking over Caparo, but we can only prevent a similar tragedy from happening again if we address these structural problems. Here, the EU has a key role to play where the government is failing to step up to the plate."@en1
