"Madam President, the British Government defines long-term unemployment as someone who is out of work for 12 months or more. However, I am sure that many families and individuals view this definition as far too lengthy. Over the last six years, long-term unemployment in Europe has swelled. Around half of Europe’s 25 million unemployed have been jobless for over a year. Over 12% have not worked for more than four years. The EU writes legislation which pushes up the price of energy and sets renewable targets which do not provide a secure future for any sort of industry, let alone heavy industry. The British taxpayer will end up picking up the bill for the extra people who find themselves unemployed again. The north of England suffered under the Conservatives during the 1980s and 1990s, and is doing so again. The ‘northern powerhouse’ promised by David Cameron is a total myth, and it is a Brussels powerhouse that we should worry about and have to deal with."@en1
