"Mr President, I would be delighted if we could speed things up somewhat in the Chamber, having been here until nearly midnight last night – not fun, and quite frankly a waste of everybody’s time, not to mention our taxpayers’ money.
When this proposal was first launched there was a big question: where was the specific just cause for it? We heard earlier that it looks as though some attempts have been made to address that. Do I have confidence? No I do not.
What exactly does facilitating entry of frequent pre-vetted third-party nationals into the European Union mean? Absolute gobbledygook! It does not take account of anything to do with identity theft, criminal intent, cyber-attacks or, as has been mentioned, the mass migration that is now underway.
Three weeks ago we heard that Schengen was effectively dead. I cannot remember whether it was Ms Merkel or Mr Hollande who said that, but if that is the case then the fundamental premise of this whole proposal is gone: it has evaporated, it has disappeared. Border controls need to return to the ownership and responsibility of Member States. This proposal is now outdated; it is not fit for purpose; and it is certainly not value for money."@en1
