lpv:spoken text	"Mr President, regulating GMOs is a question of both reason and responsibility. Reason should dictate whether we decide to use GMOs in the first place. Some GMOs are known for their potential to contribute to tackling the challenge of global food security and can deliver positive agricultural and health impacts. On the other hand, some GMOs can encourage farmers to use even more chemicals that cause considerable damage to biodiversity, the environment and, especially, cause climate change. Responsibility must therefore be our guiding principle with regards to EU GMO policy. The heart of our policy must be an independent, thorough, case-by-case assessment of each new GM trait by the European Food Safety Authority. In this way, incentives for further scientific research are preserved and the centralisation of the process ensures the integrity of the Single Market. The Commission’s proposal, alas, fails on both counts and therefore should be rejected. Let our GMO policy be guided by reason and responsibility within a common European approach."@en1
