"Mr President, we support the proposal for a revision of current EU regulation on the authorisation system of GMOs in Europe. However, we reject the rapporteur’s view on GMOs as we believe that each Member State should have the power to opt out and decide if it wishes to restrict or prohibit the use of genetically modified food and feed in its own country.
We do not agree with the restrictions put in place by the Commission with respect to the right of opting out. In particular, we think that each Member State should have the right to ban a product if its representatives believe that the product could be a danger to human and animal health or to the environment. Similarly, we do not consider that a prior decision in this instance from the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) is sufficient, due to the inexcusable lack of transparency and the impossibility of accessing data for independent research and, to be honest, the dubious test method used both for GM and feed. In short, we believe that the prior risk assessment method used by EFSA is too short and risky. All documents used for the prior evaluation should be available for independent research, and each Member State should be able to take such crucial decisions without interference by unelected bureaucrats in Brussels."@en1
