"Investment in basic healthcare is a vital pillar of development. The Ebola crisis has exposed this dramatically in West Africa, with a terrible toll on their societies. The affected countries need investment to build their own healthcare systems. Labour MEPs are fully behind the call for Universal Health Coverage, which is achievable as part of the new Sustainable Development Goals adopted by world leaders in New York in September.
The framework has been set and now we need the action to achieve the right to health for all.
I have been particularly concerned with the impact of the crisis on women and children, who are disproportionately affected when health services are overstretched. In my work on the FEMM Committee and ACP Delegation, I highlight the gender aspects of humanitarian aid and support, and would like to raise these here too."@en1
