"This is a much welcomed own initiative report concerning the lessons that can be learned from this particular outbreak and how we can prevent disease spread and further loss of life in any future outbreaks. 11 314 people died from the 2014 Ebola outbreak. In total over 15 000 cases were confirmed, three of which were within the EU itself as the UK, Spain and Italy each registered a case. I am pleased to note that, at least in these three cases, there were no fatalities.
As a former medical doctor, I welcome the call for the establishment of a permanent European rapid response capability, comprising experts and laboratory support staff, epidemiologists and logistic facilities. This is an area where expertise and best practice can be best achieved by working together across the EU, in cases where we are fighting mutual threats. The reports highlighting the need to politically and economically support Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea is also to be welcomed. These three countries have been most affected by the outbreak and rebuilding their economies is vital."@en1
