"I welcome today's adoption of the resolution on the Ebola crisis. Now that we are starting to see the end of this epidemic, we need to take on responsibilities to help the countries that have been affected by this tragic disease. By implementing development aid measures we can support the social and healthcare systems, particularly in Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea.
These countries are ones recorded to be at the bottom of the United Nations Development Programme human development index. Their health and education systems are severely disrupted and the Ebola crisis has left the population in seriously vulnerable conditions.
Even though the news are not reporting about the situation on the ground as often as it used to, it does not mean that the problems are resolved, far from it. The Ebola crisis has set these countries back economically at least 5 to 10 years.
The repercussions of non-functioning health and education systems will lead to further poverty, deprivation and a continued threat to global public health. This will no doubt have a knock-on effect on migration towards other African and EU countries."@en1
