"This hugely important proposal on the ‘Telecoms Single Market’ contained a number of items including an end to rip-off roaming charges by June 2017 and huge savings by April 2016. It also contained some references and guarantees on net neutrality but crucially not enough to ensure it was guaranteed in all situations. I, along with other MEPs co-sponsored 11 amendments to guarantee net neutrality. I firstly voted against an amendment from the EFDD which called for the European Parliament to reject the entire package. If this amendment had gone through, roaming charges would have continued which would have been a field day for telecom companies and the rip-off of consumers would have continued. Furthermore, the limited steps towards net neutrality would also have gone with absolutely no deal. We then voted on all 11 amendments regarding net neutrality which I supported. Unfortunately they were defeated by a large majority. The outcome now is an end to roaming charges and limited provisions on net neutrality. The battle continues on net neutrality but it is important to note that Member States can ensure this principle as the Netherlands has done, so this is an issue for both Member States and the EU."@en1
