"Madam President, when is a repeal not a repeal? When it is a facade. It sounds like a little bit of a joke, does it not? I mean you might expect that I, as somebody who is opposed to British membership of the European Union, would be very much in favour of repeal and, of course, in general I am. But what we have got here is a repeal of a directive which has already been duplicated. So it is not as if we are going to actually lose anything impractical from the statute book whatsoever, but at the same time when you read through the Scott Cato report, it is quite clear that the amendments which have been inserted into this report under RuleĀ 50 of the committee procedure include things like calling on the Commission to negotiate tax arrangements, and so on. So what we have got, on the one hand, is something which headlines as a repeal but on the other it masquerades as a way of getting more Europe in there, so therefore I voted against."@en1
