"Mr President, we should indeed understand the gravity of the situation. It is important that, whatever our political views, we do not give up on the European Union for a well-organised and compassionate response. It is the reason why Commissioner Avramopoulos and the Committee on Budgets will meet with us in a few minutes after the votes: we have to do something. We have to take action.
It is right that the Commission convened the West Balkan summit. It did so with a lot of criticism, but the chaos has to be resolved. People are suffering as winter comes. We will see more deaths and this Parliament will call for action. So action has to be taken, and that means that this Parliament must do its work. After all the talk is finished, we will have to do the work, we will have to get the financial instruments and we will have to ensure that the hotspots work.
Commissioner, my interest is to ensure that those hotspots and reception centres work. They would have worked if the asylum conditions had been created over the past years and Member States had done it then. So we have to do it now. We have to get on with it and we have to make it work in the next few weeks."@en1
