"Mr President, I rise once again to express my concern as to how we ensure that children born today can see lions, rhinos and elephants in the wild and not just in zoos. We are witnessing an unseen extinction crisis, yet we still allow trophy hunting. We have all heard the incomprehensible story of the demise of Cecil the lion. It struck a chord of revulsion with millions, and yet new permits continued to be issued – for example to a German hunter recently, to kill one of Africa’s largest elephants just for the sheer sport of it. During the decade up to 2013, nearly 27 000 hunting trophies originating from Africa and America were imported into Europe – and that is a conservative estimate. The EU is the world’s biggest aid donor, which gives us leverage in Africa and elsewhere to stop the issuing of permits that allow trophy hunting to continue. I urge the Commission and Member States to take up a leadership role in CITES and to involve this House in its decision—making to put pressure on states that issue permits for trophy hunting and also to restrict all trophy imports. I will be launching a written declaration on this matter, and I hope colleagues will support me."@en1
