"Mr President, Médecins Sans Frontières
Samaritan’s Purse – they and other NGOs did a great job. They were on the ground fighting this terrible disease before the politicians even started really talking about it. Then when we did act we did everything in slow motion. We were playing catch-up and so every hospital, every new hospital that was built, was full within hours. Rather than convert buildings quickly into makeshift hospitals, we did the job to a higher standard but it took many weeks, during which time the crisis got worse.
So my message to the EU, to the Member States, to countries around the world is this: next time please understand the urgent nature of emergencies, learn from the NGOs, learn from the people who risked their lives to fight Ebola and let us learn very simply that acting quickly is not only cheaper but also saves lives."@en1
