"Mr President, we will also support this. The last time the package travel rules were updated was in 1990. That was before the internet started transforming every industry, and so we need to bring these rules into the digital age. This will allow click-through holidays to have the same protection as those bought through high street travel agents. Twice as many people will be covered, and that is vital.
If an operator goes bankrupt, or if a natural disaster or a terrorist attack disrupts a holiday, people will not be stranded just because they booked online. They will also be protected from last-minute hikes, allowing them to cancel if the price goes up by more than 8% after purchase. These safeguards are good not just for holiday-makers, but also for the travel industry; they will give people more certainty and confidence to book in the first place. This makes the legislation fit for the digital age and, in the context of the digital single market, that is vital. It allows consumers to have the protection they expect without constraining new business models. That is something we should bear in mind when looking at other sectors."@en1
