"Climate change is nothing less than an existential threat. Climate change is affecting and will increasingly continue to affect every aspect of our lives, our well—being, our health, our economy and the ecosystems we depend on for survival.
In Ireland alone, our sea levels are rising on average about 3.5 cm per decade, we are facing more frequent and more serious sea storms, we face wetter autumn and winter seasons, leading to floods, and drier summers, leading to water shortages. We are more exposed to UV light than we have even been, the depletion of ozone will drastically increase the incidence of all types of skin cancer.
The impact of climate change and its causes on our health is already evident. Where there is high air pollution, a greater number of children are admitted into hospitals with lung problems, the quality of the water which we drink has decreased considerably.
We urgently need a binding agreement, showing international collective responsibility, to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions. We are at serious risk of failure in averting dangerous and potentially catastrophic climate change."@en1
