"Madam President, this week the official receiver managing the liquidation of the SSI plant at Redcar in my constituency announced the full closure of the site after 175 years of steelmaking: 2 200 direct jobs have gone, with potentially 6 000 further job losses in the supply chain. This is a major blow for our regional economy and for the whole of the UK steel industry. The European Globalisation Adjustment Fund was established for exactly this sort of situation. In 2011, Dutch print workers were able to access those funds, providing workers negatively affected by globalisation with the funds needed to support them. However, the Tory Government in the UK is refusing to apply for this funding. The Tories are sacrificing Redcar steel workers on the altar of Thatcherite dogma. If Mr Cameron wants to be remembered as a socially compassionate Conservative, his deeds fly in the face of this practice. The UK Government should make a sectoral application right now to support our steel industry."@en1
