"It is indefensible that in our country, in this day and age, on average, women earn just 81p an hour for every pound a man earns. Forty-five years after the Equal Pay Act, this is completely unacceptable. We need to turn gender equality in law into gender equality in practice. Based on the current rate of progress, the gender pay gap will not be closed until 2084. Along with my Labour colleagues, I have long supported rules to require companies to publish their gender pay gaps. However, transparency alone is not enough: this data must be used to make equal pay a reality across Europe. That is why I voted in favour of the report and the amendments that back this requirement. It is time to stop hoping that things will change, and to take proactive steps to ensure that women achieve pay equality, not in some distant future but in the here and now."@en1
