"The EU Plan of Action on Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment in Development has been part of a global effort to ensure that women are not marginalised, but rather are equal partners in development efforts. OECD countries have tripled the amount invested in programmes for women’s empowerment and have found this to be one of the most effective uses of aid. However, there has been a problem with aid in this area being focused overwhelmingly on social projects rather than on ensuring that women have access to the formal economy. The renewed plan places the empowerment of women at the heart of all EU development initiatives, and it is something that should be considered in all sections of policy, including foreign and migration policy. The issue of the empowerment of women is not merely indissociable from development – it is development.
The plan also highlights the crucial issue of the global epidemic of violence against women and girls, and begins a strategy to tackle this, particularly with regard to women in, and fleeing, war zones where sexual assault has been used as a weapon of war. By backing this new strategic direction we make a stand for the empowerment of women globally."@en1
