"Fifty-eight countries across the globe still retain the death penalty. Although much is being done to eradicate it in certain countries, the number of executions has been on the rise in recent years. Today, we reaffirm our commitment to abolish this barbaric practice worldwide. One of our fellow Irishmen, Ibrahim Halawa, is currently facing a death sentence in Egypt, where he was arrested, at the age of 17, in August 2013. There is no evidence that links him to any of the crimes he has allegedly committed, and yet, in August, he was tried, alongside 493 others, in an extremely unfair mass-trial. There is no other way for Ibahim to seek justice unless the Irish Government and the EU intervene in this very clear violation of human rights. My thoughts are with Ibrahim."@en1
