"Madam President, I welcome this resolution on the situation in Thailand. Since the military coup in May 2014, hundreds of people have been arbitrarily arrested and detained. Sweeping and unchecked powers have been given to the military, as has been mentioned. Media outlets and websites have been censored and the rights of freedom of expression and peaceful assembly have been massively restricted.
I am particularly concerned about the situation of Andy Hall, a British human rights defender. Mr Hall faces seven years in prison and a multi-million-pound fine simply for conducting research for a report by a human rights group. The report highlighted abuses of migrant workers in Thailand by a Thai company called Natural Fruits.
The charges made against Andy Hall are utterly unfounded and he appears to have received this treatment simply because he had the temerity to expose labour exploitation. I call on the Thai authorities to adhere to their human rights obligations and to drop all charges against Mr Hall."@en1
