"The new directive replacing Directive 83/417/EEC is intended to level up EU legislation concerning certain lactoproteins (caseins and caseinates) creating a more level playing field regarding food laws. By repealing existing laws this allows for the implementation of more recent legislation on food law.
This proposal is part of the Commission’s REFIT programme designed to align existing law with the delegated and implementing powers conferred on the Commission by the Lisbon Treaty. The idea of providing the Commission with the ability to repeal existing laws would have negative implications for the UK. This proposal would align Europe with international legislation and WHO standards.
I have always advocated cutting back on red tape proposed by the Commission. In this case, the agreement allows for current EU requirements for edible caseins to become more flexible at an international level."@en1
