"Mr President, I voted against this and will vote against every single piece of environmental and energy legislation coming out of the European Union, because it kills jobs. Let us go back to the Large Combustion Plant Directive: hundreds of jobs were lost in Tilbury. And look at the Redcar plant: jobs lost last week. When will you stop this constant stream of legislation that is costing skilled jobs? What do you expect people to do when they lose their jobs in skilled industry – to go and work in Poundland? It is a disgrace. Anyone who voted for this legislation and anyone who votes for other legislation like it should explain to the people who have lost their jobs why they are in this position and why they did it. Instead of posturing and trying to appease your own consciences, look at the fact that you are creating a trail of misery in British communities where there used to be heavy industry and now there is not. So one lesson that I want to leave with you all is that you have created mass unemployment by pushing forward this legislation that kills jobs and kills British industry."@en1
