"Mr President, I voted in favour of the Grzyb report, given that it is key to the EU’s clean air package and will reduce harmful emissions and improve air quality across the UK and the EU. Recent research shows that the death toll from air pollution in the UK is much higher than the 30 000 deaths previously estimated. In the whole of Europe, 500 000 people die prematurely as a result of air pollution every year. This places a huge burden on our societies. In this context, I also want to say a couple of words about the Volkswagen diesel emission scam, which is simply outrageous, precisely because of the detrimental impact on people’s health. To end this situation, in which our citizens are paying with their lives for the criminal behaviour of large corporates that seek profits at any price, we need the Commission to establish an independent EU type-approval authority. Volkswagen has made it clear that the current system in which car makers pay national testing organisations and choose themselves where they have their models tested simply is not working."@en1
