"Madam President, the total mismanagement of the migrant crisis by the EU has now led to a situation where the supposedly powerful bloc must go with an open chequebook to a Turkish President who is trying to have his cake and eat it. President Erdoğan is now using the crisis as a lever to win political and financial concessions from a weakened EU that is desperate to find a solution to this problem of its own making. Giving in to Erdoğan’s demands also makes the EU complicit in Turkey’s military actions against the PKK and other groups currently engaged in fighting ISIS. This action, in turn, could lead to more IS fighters entering Europe, like the image of the child migrant making beheading gestures that we saw published in the UK press today. When will the EU realise that, until we have a realistic solution to the wars raging across the Middle East and North Africa, no amount of political and financial concessions to other states will alleviate the migrant crisis?"@en1
