"Madam President, the complex web of relationships and partnerships that Turkey’s foreign policy has forged – from what it is doing in Syria and Libya to its dealings in Egypt and with Israel in the last couple of years – has become almost incomprehensible. As Turkey rumbles towards elections on 1 November 2015, it remains to be seen whether Erdoğan can restore his AK party’s lost majority. In the meantime, clashes with the PKK, whom he considers to be the real terrorists, rather than ISIS, continue. The ceasefire that we thought might be going somewhere – and any lasting peace – is now completely lost. The EU must now engage constructively with Turkey, a strategic country which has sadly not respected its readmission agreements with Greece and has allowed a huge exodus of migrants. Russia’s recent push to support the Assad regime results in a Russia-Syria policy that is now entirely opposed to the stated aims of Erdoğan’s Turkey, whose airspace Russia is now violating. The deterioration of human rights in Turkey, with the arrest of journalists, is also a major concern. So, altogether, the situation is pretty bleak, but I do hope that this year will see at least a solution to the problem in Cyprus under the new leadership of the Turkish community leader, Mustafa Akinci. At least there is some prospect of bright light in Cyprus, but for the rest it is all pretty depressing."@en1
