"Mr President, as we have seen this week, Russia has grasped the opportunity to shore up her Middle East ally through supportive airstrikes, whilst reminding us of President Putin’s potential to commit large troop numbers to Syria. To further complicate matters, we must also consider reports that some Chinese military personnel will soon be arriving on the scene. We must wake up and smell the coffee. The West is now on the back foot with these two permanent members of the UN Security Council potentially set not just to fight against Islamic State in Syria but also possibly to change the balance of power in the Middle East, if they can determine a serious post-war settlement. The lack of ability in the West to formulate a long-term strategic plan has left us with a stark choice of whether or not we are now happy to see President Assad remain in power. Whatever the eventual outcome, the political dynamics of the Middle East may well be about to change for the foreseeable future. From what I am hearing today, it seems to me that all you can do is mumble something into your coffee."@en1
