"Madam President, although I disagree with a number of exemptions in this report, I do welcome this piece of legislation, which will see emission limits for medium combustion plants covered by law for the first time. It is right that the regulatory gap between small and large combustion plants is finally filled. Air pollution is a major, yet preventable, killer in Europe, and in my home country, Ireland, 1 300 premature deaths are attributed to bad air quality. It is estimated that the cost to the health service amounts to a staggering EUR 3 billion every year. These immense costs to citizens’ health, national budgets and, of course, to the environment should be taken very seriously indeed, and we cannot continue to kick the can down the road on air quality. Added to Ireland’s continual breach of nitrogen oxide limits, it shows that much more must be done if we are serious about tackling air pollution."@en1
