"The recently agreed UN sustainable development goals (SDGs) offer an important framework in the fight against extreme poverty, inequality and injustice. Now the real work begins, and this must be done at every level. Empowering local authorities in developing countries to ensure accountability and transparency, and provide the basic social services and infrastructure needed to ensure a decent life for all must play a role in this agenda. Local authorities in Europe and in the developing world should work together and learn from each other in order to meet common challenges and share best practice. Policy-making innovations, such as the Brazilian model of ‘participatory budgeting’, proves that local authorities can be important actors in creating a more deliberative, more democratic society."@en1
