"I voted in favour of this report which authorises the mobilisation of the European Globalisation Adjustment Fund (EGF) to benefit laid-off workers in Italian airline Alitalia.
The EGF was established to provide support for workers who lose their jobs as a result of globalisation, including the offshoring of jobs and the shifting in production patterns in Europe. It has since been expanded to also apply to workers laid off as a result of the global financial crisis. In general it can be mobilised for use if more than 500 workers in a company or sector are made redundant, and can be used to assist the dismissed workers find new jobs through job-search services and training.
In this case, Gruppo Alitalia has made 1 249 workers redundant in Lazio in 2014 as a result of increased global competition in the aviation sector; 184 of these workers have not yet secured new employment. The report authorises the mobilisation of EGF funding in order to provide personalised job-search services. I supported the use of the fund as it will provide valuable practical assistance to the unemployed."@en1
