"I voted in favour of this report which authorises the mobilisation of the European Globalisation Adjustment Fund (EGF) to benefit laid-off workers in the German car manufacturing company Adam-Opel.
The EGF can be mobilised to provide support for workers who lose their jobs as a result of globalisation or the global financial crisis. In Germany, 2,881 workers were dismissed in Adam Opel AG and one supplier as a result of the over-capacity caused by the sharp decline in car sales arising from the global financial crisis.
The social partners established a 'transfer company' to formally employ the workers for one year, and this report states that Adam-Opel will use the maximum 35% of the EGF funds allowed to pay the salaries of the workers in the transfer company (as a 'training allowance').
I have concerns with the way in which some German companies have used the EGF in this way, as I believe it is the responsibility of the company itself to meet these costs, and the EGF should be used to provide additional support. Despite this concern I support the dismissed workers receiving the benefits associated with the mobilisation of the EGF, so I voted in favour."@en1
