"Madam President, I had the honour to speak on behalf of the EPP when Mr Tsipras, the Greek Prime Minister was here, and at that time I was rather critical of him. But I did say that if he went away and put a serious package together, the European Union would meet him more than halfway. He has done that and, in fairness, he has been re-elected.
Having said that, it is going to be very difficult for Greece. Like yourself, Madam President, I come from Ireland, and we know how difficult the bail-out programme was. But by sticking with it, we are now coming out the other side and things are improving. I want to see the same happening for Greece, but certainly every effort must be made to help them, and if, through the Structural Investment Funds, we can be more lenient with Greece, then we have an obligation to do that.
We are also conscious of the fact that Greece is bearing a lot of the brunt of the migration crisis. That, with their bail-out situation, makes it difficult, so we must help them in every way, and this is a good step."@en1
